Feast of St Aidan of Lindisfarne

Vesperal Divine Liturgy for 31st August 2018

This year, our parish celebrated our Patronal Feast of St Aidan, which falls on 31st August, with an evening Divine Liturgy on the previous evening of 30th August. Orthodox Christianity follows the ancient Jewish tradition where days are reckoned from sunset to sunset, rather than sunrise to sunrise. Once the sun has set, and the ‘Vesperal Light’ shines, it is the following day!

Our father among the saints Aidan of Lindisfarne, Enlightener of Northumbria (?-651), was the founder and first bishop of the monastery on the island of Lindisfarne off the northeast coast of England. A Christian missionary, he is credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria (Northern England).
